Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

NCS studies can give an overall impression of peripheral nerves function and is used for diagnosing localised or generalised nerve pathology. NCS are performed by using an externally generated electrical impulse to stimulate a specific isolated nerve, resulting in propagation of the electrical signal proximally or distally along the nerve. These signals are then recorded by electrodes, which are placed on the skin along the nerve being tested. Further, various calculations are performed, assessing the different parameters of the nerve function and comparing them to the normal. This study gives the sensation of small electrical shocks, is non-invasive and no after-effects are expected. NCS is sometimes performed in isolation but is often accompanied by EMG depending on the clinical presentation and NCS findings.
